Fiorentina Fanzone – End of season edition

What a season it has been for the Fiorentina fans. Second place in the league, and winning the Dave Phillips Trophy. There has however, just been the announcement from the club that the fans had been dreading. The boss is leaving! Let’s head straight to the press conference.

‘’I can confirm the rumours are true, I will be leaving the club in the summer. It has been a fantastic 3 seasons at the club, with 2 before that with the same squad at PSV. When I renamed the club back from the dead my aim was to restore the Fiorentina name back to where it belongs amongst the top sides in Europe. I believe I have achieved that aim, and now it is time to move on. I always had a soft spot for the purple shirts, and the Gabriel Batistuta era Fiorentina side of the 90’s, and it has been a great privilege to manage this team.’’

So what legacy is there for a new manager? There are two trophies in the cabinet, the EF2 winner’s trophy, and the DPT cup. The side is strong enough to compete well in the Champions League, there will be a good amount of money in the bank to build as the new manager sees fit. Two areas that will need addressing are increasing the stadium size, and whether to invest in youth development. The defence might need a younger lad or two to add pace, but there is a great young keeper in the academy to come through at some point.

So where next for Kirby? It is understood he plans to continue a similar project at Luton, who will be renamed Portsmouth, and aim to get them in the Champions league within a similar timeframe. It was felt too much of a conflict to manage two sides in the top division, but he may well seek a second tier side to start the process again with.
